EVENTS AND CLUBS IN MANHATTAN -

Audobon Bar and Grill - 3956 Broadway (near 166th Street), Washington Heights, NYC. 212-928-5200 code 440, or 917-653-5268. Bar with latin music and dancing in the back on certain nights. Friday is "Sazon Fridays" with DJ playing merengue, salsa, hourse & reggae. Popular with a young urban neighborhood crowd. Subway - A, B, 1/9 to 168th Street station. May be closed now.

Bagatelle - 12 St. Marks Place (between 2nd & 3rd Avenues), NYC. 212-560-4889. Sometimes has latin music, I believe it's some Wednesdays. DJ playing soul, funk, salsa and Afro-Cuban music, with live percussionists and bands occasionally coming. Check with club for latin evenings and schedule.

Baja - 555 West 33rd Street (corner 11th Avenue), Manhattan, NYC. 212-247-0400. Saturday nights are latin. They usually have a mix of house, reggae, salsa, merengue, classics, etc., for a younger crowd.

Bistro Latino - 1711 Broadway (corner 54th Street), NYC. 212-956-1000. Latin Supper Club. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights have varying programs, sometimes salsa or charanga, and sometimes the typical mix of merengue, salsa, house, latin pop, etc. Be sure to call the club before going to find out what's currently scheduled. Some Thursdays are El Sabor Del Mambo: excellent "On 2" salsero nights. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY page - click here.

Blue Angel - 323 West 44th Street, NYC. 212-262-3437. They used to advertise latin on Saturday nights (salsa, merengue, house, reggae, classics).

Boleros - 3920 Broadway (between 164th & 165th Streets), Washington Heights, NYC. 212-543-9500. Argentine restaurant which sometimes has shows and music on the weekends, usually tango, bolero, etc. I don't know if there's dancing. Call restaurant for music schedule and details.

Buddha Bar -150 Varick Street (corner of Vandam), NYC. 212-358-5775. Various latin music on different nights.

Cafe Con Leche - See Kit Kat Club.

Cafe Remy - 104 Greenwich Street (near Rector Street, 2 blocks south of World Trade Center), NYC. 212-267-4646. Downtown latin club open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays. Free dance lesson with Mario Diaz on Wednesdays. Books name bands. I hear: somewhat younger crowd, crowded dance floor, only a few "On 2", difficult to navigate the dance floor. Music is a mix of various kinds of music. Also, the dance floor is tilted, so when you spin, you start out in one place and end up in another. See their web site at www.caferemy.com . They also are involved with moonlight cruises during the summer, usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have no idea what the music, crowd or dance conditions are on these cruises. Call 212-267-1065 for more info. For description of this club on SalsaWeb - click here.

Carbon - 605 West 55th Street (between 11th & 12th Avenues), NYC. 212-582-8282. Upstairs has mainly latin music, with mix of salsa, merengue, house, reggae and classics. Younger crowd. Sometimes books name salsa and merengue bands. Call for schedule.

Carnival - (formerly the China Club) 2130 Broadway (between 74th & 75th Streets), NYC. 212-579-1000. Beginning 4/9/99, Friday nights will have DJ's playing salsa, merengue, latin house & classics, reggae, bachata, perico ripiao. This is normally not a latin club, so please call the place to make sure that Fridays will still be playing the above music.

CBGB - 315 Bowery (at Bleecker Street), NYC. 212-982-4052 or 212-254-0983. Will occasionally have latin bands, for example Latin Tribe and Babaloo. Call club for latin evenings and bands.

Cheetah -12 West 21st Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues), NYC. 212-206-7770. Wednesdays: Mi Casa, featuring DJ playing salsa, merengue, latin house and club music.

Classico Restaurant & Bar - 166 William Street (between Beekman & Ann Streets), Lower Manhattan, NYC. 212-258-1438. A restaurant/bar which has a small area for dancing salsa in the back. Gets very crowded on weekends, and there are only a few ON 2 dancers at best. But the music can be quite good, played by DJ Tony "B" Barilla, a mix of classic and more modern salsa with a good dancing beat, plus a little merengue. As of 3/16/99, they have latin jazz on Wednesdays 5:00 PM to 12:00 midnight, a salsa band and dancing on Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 12:00 midnight, and a salsa DJ and dancing on Fridays 5:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Maybe open Saturdays. Call them to make sure this is still the correct schedule. There's also English music downstairs with a DJ and dancing.

Club Ivy - See Ivy Nightclub.

Club Mirage - (formerly Las Vegas) -179 Dyckman Street (corner Vermilyea Street), NYC. 212-567-9000. Plays mostly merengue, and bachata, along with some salsa and house music. Somewhat younger Washington Heights and Bronx crowd.

Club Monaco - 323 West 44th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues), NYC. 212-262-3333. Sometimes holds latin events, and sometimes the Copa sends their customers here when they have private parties. Extremely small dance floor. Generally appeals to a younger crowd. Music is a mix of salsa, merengue, latin house, reggae, "old school", etc. Call club for schedule and details. See www.evolucionlatina.com.

Club New York -252 West 43rd Street (between Broadway & 8th Avenue), NYC. Info & reservations: 212-997-9510, or 718-651-8384, or see their web site at www.nylatinmix.com . I have not been to this club, but flyers have stated they are having "Salsa Wednesdays" with DJ Sean James & Jon Falcones playing "salsa, merengue, dance" on the main floor, and DJ Manny Perez playing "house, classics, R&B and reggae" in the Lounge Room. They are also open on Thursdays, when the music is "salsa, merengue, house, reggae and classics".

Club Taboo - 218 East 52nd Street, NYC. 212-848-2266. They advertise in El Diario that they have a DJ playing "salsa and merengue" on Fridays. Call for further information.

C-Note -157 Avenue C (at East 10th Street), NYC. 212-677-8142. Has latin on some evenings: for example, the Frank Bambera Salsa Band. Call for latin evenings and bands.

Copacabana - 617 West 57th Street (between 11th and 12th Avenues), NYC. 212-582-2672. Free buffet 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Afterwork Tuesdays , as well as Sundays , are often traditional "dancer nights". The Copa gets very crowded after 8:30 or 9:00 PM on Tuesdays, and somewhat later on most Fridays and Saturdays, so doing mambo turn patterns becomes a bit difficult without collisions, unless you can carve out a little spot, or are very skilled at dancing in a small area and navigating between other couples. Often, the dance floor is crowded with "non-dancers", and these people are relatively ignorant and disrespectful of "dance floor ettiquette", and tend to push and bang into you while you are trying to dance.
About 10% dance "On 2", but since there are so many people there, you will usually find a decent number of "On 2" dancers. And many of them are excellent. Largest latin dance floor in NYC, rather slippery sometimes (consider wearing your sticky shoes), beautiful place and people. Dress: casual to dressy. Books some of the best latin bands. Has "other room" for non-latin music (hustle, house, disco, R & B, hip hop). Note: The Copa sometimes takes advantage of private party opportunities, and at those times will either close the club, or open it to the public quite late without prior notice, or keep everyone in one room only, so it becomes very crowded. To be absolutely sure of the Copa's schedule for the particular evening, call the club.
See the Copa's web site at www.copacabanany.com , sign up for their mailing list to receive passes and to cast your vote for "More Salsa" at the club. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY page - click here.

CubanSoul Parties -CubanSoul
Parties held every Wednesday at Nell's
, 246 West 14th Street (just east of 8th Avenue), NYC. Club phone - 212-675-1567. CubanSoul Phone - 718-782-1565. Visit their web site at www.cubansoul.com for more details and a discount club invite. Upstairs: Bands and DJ featuring "old school cuban music, el son montuno", "the roots of salsa", guajira, charanga, and a little bit of older "regular" salsa. Invited bands such as Los Soneros De Oriente and Nelson Gonzalez, and others are scheduled. Well attended by an enthusiastic crowd of lovers of older Cuban music. Depending on the particular Wednesday night, there may be a few "On 2" mambo dancers. Doors open at 9:00 PM. Band begins playing somewhere around 10:30 PM, with another show around midnight. Nell's is a very attractive large club with 2 medium size dancing areas and plenty of seating at tables and in lounge chairs. "Appropriate dress required, no sneakers please". The CubanSoul Parties are produced by CANDELA AKA Roger Barr. The Cuban Dance Parties phone is 718-782-2942.
Downstairs has "Pure Salsa"; by DJ Elvira, which is excellent for ON 2 dancers. See the main Calendar page for full details.

Detour -349 East 13th Street (near 1st Avenue), NYC. 212-533-6212. 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Has quartet playing latin music. No info on whether there's dancing.

Ejipto - 327 West 44th Street, NYC. 212-779-0635 and 917-859-6159. www.LaMusica.com and Pasaporte Latino hold a party every Friday night. Doors open at 10:00 PM. Music is "Pop/rock en Espanol, merengue, house, latin dance, salsa, Brazilian". See www.LaMusica.com for info on this party, and to get on the guest list.

Elbow Room - 144 Bleecker Street (between Thompson Street & Laguardia Place), NYC. 212-979-8434. La Rumba Caliente.

El Canay - 154 West 26th Street, NYC. 212-206-7383. DJ: salsa, merengue, house, hip hop.

El Flamingo - 547 West 21st Street (between 10th & 11th Avenues), NYC. 212-243-2121. Please Note: Always call this club shortly before going. They sometimes change their entertainment, open their doors many hours later than sheduled, or completely close, at the last minute. Call club to verify which nights are latin. About 50% salsa, plus merengue, hustle, house, etc. DJ sometimes manipulates salsa songs (disco style) by overlapping 2 songs at the same time, or repeating one measure or vocal line over and over; this throws off the count in the songs, and makes it impossible to stay on timing while dancing mambo.
"Latin Saturdays" has several DJ's playing "salsa, merengue, house". They sometimes book name bands, which come on around 9:30 to 10:30 PM. Few if any ON 2 dancers. Mainly a younger, non-dancer crowd. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY page - click here.

El Morocco -1036 2nd Avenue (between 54th and 55th Streets), NYC.

Expo - 124 West 43rd Street (between 6th & 7th Avenues), NYC. 212-819-0377.

Flamingo East - 219 2nd Avenue (between 13th & 14th Streets), NYC. 212-533-2860.

Gemini Lounge -221 Second Avenue (between 13th & 14th Streets), NYC. 212-254-5260. Tuesdays after 10:00 PM are samba nights. Showtime after 11:00 PM. Call club for other nights with latin music.

Gonzales Y Gonzales - 625 Broadway (between Bleeker & Houston), NYC. 212-473-8787. Live bands on certain nights playing a mix of latin music, some salsa. Depending on the night, especially on the weekends, this club can be very crowded, with pretty chaotic dancing. G & G has a very popular bar scene, and a very ecclectic crowd and charged atmosphere. I have heard that Wednesday nights are less crowded, and sometimes enjoyable for dancers, with some OK dancers on the floor, and usually a few dancing "On 2". And sometimes, a group of very good dancers comes. But you may wish to bring partner(s) just to be sure you'll have some mambo company. Recent bands have included Los Jovenes Del Barrio, Viento de Agua, Mo Guajiro, Willie Villegas, Ray Santiago, Grupo Caribe, Wayne Gorbeas. Call to find out exact bands on what nights.

Greatest Bar On Earth - "Mambo Baby?" - At Windows On The World. 1 World Trade Center, 107th Floor, Liberty Street (between Church & West Streets), NYC. 212-524-7000. Thursdays are latin nights with live bands. Sometimes very crowded with latin and wall street crowd. People dancing all kinds of ways, a few "On 2", but sometimes with little space to do it. Usually opens around 7:00 PM. $10 after 7:00 PM. Bands come on around 9:00 PM. For info on "Mambo Baby" latin nights, call the promoters Francisco Navarro and Frank Maldonado at 917-953-2368 or 917-506-2907. Here's what one of our fellow ON 2 salsero's wrote after a visit to the place during March 2000:
"Greatest Bar on Earth - ";Mambo, Baby?" - Thursdays: They've raised their cover charge to $5, after 5pm, and to $15, after 6pm; and it still gets packed! Around 7pm, the unimpressive house music finally turns to salsa (with some merengue and cha cha). Between 8:30 and 9pm, the DJ reverts back to lackluster, house music (and some merengue). So, there's less than one-and-a-half hours of "Mambo, Baby?" before 9:00 pm, when the bands start. The bands play good salsa, but the DJ doesn't: his selection could improve, and he tends to crop off the beginnings and ends of the songs. But, by the time the bands play, there's little room to dance, and cigarette butts, napkins, and spilled drinks clutter the floor. Nevertheless, if you can wait out the long stretches of house music, and don't mind being bumped into while dancing, it's a pretty good time. Other notables: beautiful bar, terrazzo dance floor, expensive food, free coat check, and many New Jersey commuters, and some tourists."

Ideya - 349 West Broadway (between Grand and Broome Streets), So Ho, downtown Manhattan, NYC. 212-625-1441. Subway: A, C, E, 1, 9 to Canal Street station. Very nice restaurant, long a narrow, with a small area for dancing and an occasional "salsa" band playing in a latin-jazz or Afro-Cuban style. Just a few dancers, not ON 2. Call for schedule of what evenings are latin/salsa.

Ivy Nightclub and VIP/Cigar Lounge - 2130 Broadway (between 74th St. & 75th St.), Upper West Side, Manhattan, NY. 800-950-3730. Beautiful club, very smokey, loud volume, young crowd. Music is mix of salsa, house, merengue, hip-hop, R & B, 70's-80's, classics. Call club to find out what type of music is played on which nights of the week. Wednesdays: They state they'll be playing salsa. I'm told Sundays is "salsa, merengue, R&B". They are billing it as "classic Sundays pa' los rumberos". Club opens after 9:00 or 10:00 PM on these Sundays. I would be interested in your feedback on this place, especially Wednesdays. Please email me at Salsa@nyc.rr.com .

Izzy Bar -166 First Avenue (between 10th & 11th Streets), NYC. 212-228-0444. "Soul chango: afro-cuban and latin classics, latin jazz, rhumba and guajira. Live percussionists sometimes join the DJ music. Probably latin on Wednesdays, but call first for exact schedule, which is subject to change.

Jack's Joint - 771 8th Avenue (47th Street), NYC. 212-627-4039. Features "Cuban style" music on Sunday evenings starting at 9:30 PM. I'm told there's a "big smooth wooden dance floor".

Key Club - 76 East 13th Street (between Broadway and 4th Avenue), NYC. 212-388-1063. Thursday nights are latin They usually have a mix of house, reggae, salsa, merengue, classics, etc., for a younger crowd.

Kit Kat Klub - 124 West 43rd Street (between Broadway & 8th Avenue), NYC. 212-819-0377. Friday nights are latin They usually have a mix of house, reggae, salsa, merengue, classics, etc., for a younger crowd.

Knitting Factory - click here.

La Belle Epoque -827 Broadway (between 12th and 13th streets), downtown Manhattan, NYC. 212-254-6436. "La Rumba" Salsa party with live old school Cuban music band which plays at 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM every Thursday. Salsa lesson with Rosa Collantes from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. This is a restaurant, so food is available also. Dance floor is a kind of tile. I have heard reports from several dancers that this dance floor has left them sore in the ankles, knees and back in the days following a night of dancing at La Belle Epoque. I have not been to this event so I can give no further info on the floor. For more info on these Cuban music parties, contact Daniel Carpi email - carpi@axon.rutgers.edu , and his web site at www.larumba.net. Or contact him and Daniela Aphalo at dani@cubansoul.net and lamaguluna@earthlink.net, (718)599-6566. How to get there by train: N, R, 4, 5 or 6 trains to Union Square station, then walk down Broadway 1 1/2 blocks.

La Linea - 15 First Avenue (between 1st & 2nd Streets), Lower East Side, NYC. 212-592-3138. Sometimes on Wednesdays has evening of soul, funk, salsa and Afro-Cuban, plus live percussionists joining in with DJ. Call for schedule.

La Mega 97.9 FM - Features various events, such as club dates, boat rides, street festivals. For information, go their web site at www.lamega.com. For example, during summer months, Latin Party Cruises leave the South Street Seaport every Wednesday evening, and La Mega/Copacabana Cruises leave Pier 63 at West 23rd Street on Thursday evenings.

LaMusica.com - This web site has a good listing of events where there will be latin music. It includes a New York City club guide, an Upcoming Concerts and Tours guide, and a National and Worldwide Club Guide for those who will be traveling. LaMusica.com's emphasis is on the music, and not specifically mambo dancing, so be sure to check their listed events or clubs to verify if there will be dancing. Click herefor their section on events and clubs.

La Nueva Escuelita - 301 West 39th Street (near 8th Avenue), midtown Manhattan, NYC. 212-631-0588. I've never been there, and never spoken to anyone who has. From a Village Voice description - "This latin dance club and show palace is one of a kind. The salsa, merengue, and Latin house will keep you on the dance floor all night....that is unless Las Divas de Escuelita are putting on one of their legendary shows".

Latin In Manhattan - 217 East 3rd Street, Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC. 212-375-9066.

Latin Quarter - 2551 Broadway (at 96th Street), NYC. 212-675-6400. On Fridays and Saturdays: Somewhat younger crowd, not strictly a salsa place (mix of merengue, salsa (small percentage), bachata, house, disco, etc.), sometimes music very loud all over the club. Sundays is "SalsaRengue Sundays. Very few "On 2" dancers on the weekends, partly because it's packed and there's so little room to move. Opinions differ on this club, but a few "On 2" dancers love it and go regularly, mainly because they book big name bands and because of the very active singles/social scene. It's a matter of taste, so make your own decision. Since this is not a predominantly (75%) salsa place, I normally won't list Fridays and Saturdays on the main Calendar unless they have a special event of interest to "On 2" salseros. Please note - As of 3/4/99 Thursdays are salsa/mambo nights, with 75% salsa music played, and it's less crowded. There's a dance lesson from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (currently by Razz M'Tazz), and a good percentage of ON 2 dancers who hang out there from 9:00 PM until quite late. Click Here for info on the Thursday night event. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY page - click here.

Le Bar Bat - 311 West 57th Street (just west of 8th Avenue), midtown Manhattan, NYC. 212-307-7228. Sometimes has "Latin Wednesdays", playing salsa, merengue, bachata, latino rock, house, R & B, hip hop, classics. Call club to make sure they are still having latin on Wednesdays.

Music Energy - Circle Line Boat Parties - A local web site called www.LatinClubs.com lists various events which feature a mix of salsa, merengue, house, reggae and perhaps other musics. During the summer, they provide information on boat parties which go out for the evening in and around NYC. The promoters are stating that there is approximately 50% salsa, 20% merengue, 20% house and 10% reggae played on the 3 hour cruises, and then offer free admission to Latin Quarter, Bistro Latino, or other local clubs after getting off the boat. Boat ride goes from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Advanced tickets are recommended. They also have club and special events listings.

Only a few "On 2" dancers, some of whom are very good. You may wish to bring your own partner(s). Enough room on the dance floor for mambo turns and shines. Some have complained that the dance floor is uneven and therefore difficult for complicated turns and shines. Recently (1/15/99), they've advertised in El Diario "Noches Latinas" every Saturday, with rock en Espanol, salsa, merengue, "latin dance", opening at 10:30 PM. Info 212-779-0635 and 718-777-1660.

Consider bringing your own partner or group. Excellent situation for reviewing, drilling, creating new moves, a practice space. Jimmy's Bronx Cafe - 281 West Fordham Road (corner of Major Deagan Expressway), Bronx. 718-329-2000. Large latin restaurant and recently-built new club, very popular in the West Central Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Books name salsa and merengue bands on weekends, when DJ plays salsa, merengue, bachata and house, for a younger crowd. Very low percentage of salsa, and very few mambo dancers on the very crowded dance floor. Volume is very loud; speakers are distorting, sound echos throughout the huge club. I've been told the somewhat more salsa evenings are on Thursdays and Sundays, with a bit more mature crowd, but I'm not sure. I believe Thursdays has a dance lesson by Ralph & Lucille Lew. I have no info on the sound level on these other evenings. Warning: There have been reports that things are stolen from cars that are parked with Jimmy's Valet Parking attendants, so do not leave anything valuable in the car. Unfortunately, nearby street parking is very limited and of questionable safety. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY page - click here.

Until the summer of 1997, the Sunday After Beach Parties at Side Street were famous for many years, with great music and dancing outdoors, food, a bar, lots of tables and plenty of room to dance, very laid back, friendly and casual (shorts, jeans, whatever). It was home to some of the best "ON 2" salseros. On 10/10/90, they are reopening the downstairs for classic mambo nights. For description of this club on his SalsaWeb.com/NY - click here. Tropicana -2000 Tonnelle Avenue, North Bergen, Route 1-9N, NJ. 201-583-0800 or 201-330-8960. A younger "urban" crowd dancing to a lot of house, and a bit of salsa, merengue, etc. Not "ON 2" crowd.
